Genetic Counselor, Cardiology; Centra’s Heart and Vascular Institute

At the Centra’s Heart and Vascular Institute, patients receive the most advanced, comprehensive cardiovascular care in central Virginia. The Heart and Vascular's team of heart specialists is experienced and knowledgeable about all aspects of your heart's health--from arrhythmias and cholesterol to cardiac catheterizations and congenital heart disease. The genetic counselor will join our team of physicians and advanced practice providers in Lynchburg, VA.
DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITES:
- Work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive cardiovascular services to patients.
- Provide genetic counseling services to individuals with a suspected inherited predisposition to cardiovascular disease, including risk factors and genetic concepts
- Reviews available genetic testing options with the patient/family.
- Coordinate genetic testing for at risk individuals and provide appropriate pre-test and post-result counseling.
- Member of a health care team and acts as a patient advocate as well as a genetic resource to physicians.
- The Cardiology genetic counselor provides psychosocial support and advocacy for patients.
- Develop and implement educational programs on cardiogenetics to health care providers and the community.
- Assist with ethical, legal, and social issues regarding genetic information and testing
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Master’s level genetic counseling degree from an accredited training program by the Accreditation Counsel for Genetic Counseling (ACGC)
- Certification: ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) board certification OR board eligible
- Licensure: Ability to obtain Virginia licensure within 1 year
- Experience: Previous experience in cardiology preferred, but not required
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

The UVA Department of Pediatrics is seeking a genetic counselor to join a team of highly motivated genetic counselors and medical geneticists. This is a clinical position where the genetic counselor will see patients both independently as well as in support of our medical geneticists and other physicians in the Health System. Genetic counselors work closely with the medical geneticists in weekly clinics and responsibilities include medical record review, developing differential diagnoses, eliciting medical history, obtaining and documenting family history, providing pretest counseling, identifying and ordering genetic tests as indicated, reviewing and disclosing test results, offering support and resources to patients and their families, and assisting with ongoing care.
Additionally, the genetic counselor will travel to our monthly satellite outreach clinics within Virginia to increase patient accessibility to genetic counseling. They will also assist medical geneticists with inpatient consults. The genetic counselor may have the opportunity to specialize in an area of their choosing by being involved in a multidisciplinary clinic. Our team is also involved in the education and training of a variety of medical students, residents, fellows, and genetic counseling students. This genetic counselor will provide education for these trainees through time spent in clinic, developing education modules, and participating in case conferences.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Gather and review pertinent medical records in preparation for clinic visits.
- Take family pedigrees, gather medical history, and provide interpretation.
- Participate in clinical evaluation of patients with a wide variety of indications. The majority of our patients are pediatric, but adult patients are seen as well. This includes developing a differential diagnosis and the ability to select and order appropriate genetic testing as indicated.
- Educate patients and families about genetic conditions so that they may make informed decisions regarding testing and management options.
- Discuss genetic diagnoses, etiology, inheritance patterns, and risk of occurrence/recurrence in language patients and families can understand.
- Provide information about available reproductive and prenatal diagnostic testing options when applicable.
- Prepare case summaries, clinical documentation, and genetic counseling letters.
- Train and supervise genetic counseling students in their clinical experiences. Assist with training of other clinical learners as appropriate.
- Stay current with new developments in the field of genetics and participate in continued education.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program.
- Experience: None
- Licensure: Board Certification or eligible by the American Board Of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Certification required within 18 months of hire.
